Long before Lady Gaga was the cultural force she is today, she appeared on “The Hills” back in September 2008. Gaga was booked to play the launch party for a client of People’s Revolution boss Kelly Cutrone.
“Lady Gaga, we put her on ‘The Hills.’ Do you remember that? Nobody remembers,” Cutrone told MTV News when she stopped by to talk about her new book, “If You Have to Cry, Go Outside,” and “Kell on Earth.” “MTV has got to take credit for this right now, because People’s Revolution put Lady Gaga on TV before anybody.”
Cutrone recalled being very apprehensive about Gaga’s performance. “It was when Lauren and Whitney were still working at People’s Rev,” she said. “It was an L.A. moment, and we were doing an event with a company named Dylan George … and [Dylan George’s Danny was] like, ‘I want to do a launch party. My friend is managing this girl. She’s going to be a huge star at Interscope. Her name is Lady Gaga.’ I’m like, ‘Not interested. We’re going to do a party with Brent Bolthouse.’ ”
As it turned out, everyone wanted to get Gaga at the party, including Bolthouse, Heidi Montag’s onetime boss on the show. So Cutrone eventually gave in. “[Brent] calls me back up: ‘There’s this chick, Lady Gaga. We’re doing it,’ ” she remembered. ” ‘She’s gonna wear the jeans. She’s launching the jeans.’
“I tell her to come to the office. I mean, it’s L.A. It’s 100 degrees. But she’s in this Alice Cooper [look]. I took one look at her, and I was like, ‘I’m so not into it.’ I went upstairs, and Whitney and Lauren were looking at me like, ‘What?’ I went upstairs and I called [Dylan George’s] Danny, like, ‘Dude, this is way too Marilyn Manson for me. I’m not into it.’ ”
Cutrone let Gaga stick around, and the rest is TV (and music) history. “Lauren or Whitney, I think, they break [the zipper on Gaga’s] jumpsuit, and you barely see me on this episode,” Cutrone laughed. “I was hanging in the back room.”
