Selena Gomez Starstruck By Shakira On ‘Wizards Of Waverly Place’

Selena Gomez is growing up. And the same can be said of her onscreen persona on “Wizards of Waverly Place,” Alex Russo. Gomez revealed that as the show progresses, it only makes sense to have the tone of the show itself grow up a little bit.
” ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ is getting much more mature in terms of our comedy, [but] we are still keeping the youthfulness of our characters,” she told MTV News. “I just feel like we’re all kind of growing, so the characters are evolving.”
And the more mature comedy on the show isn’t the only thing that Gomez is looking forward to. “As far as anything else exciting coming up, we have a couple of episodes … we have the Shakira episode coming up,” she said, adding, “And I think we have another hour-long special as well.”
While she didn’t reveal much about the plot of the episode starring Shakira, she does say that the two will share a duet. But if you want to know what song they sing together, you’ll have to tune in. “The Shakira episode was so much fun. I’m not sure I can reveal too much. I just know that she had a very big part in it and I was just starstruck the entire time,” she said. “I also felt like I needed to work out after I was next to her because she’s gorgeous. She was really nice and she was really funny. So the role was her playing herself, obviously, and I got to sing a song with her as well.”
So did Gomez prove that her hips don’t lie by dancing with Shakira? “No! I wasn’t even about to attempt her dance moves,” she laughed. “There’s no way I would be that skilled.”

Is Paula Abdul Joining Simon Cowell’s ‘X Factor’?

Since her ‘American Idol’ exit, shows like ‘Dancing With the Stars’ and ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ have come calling.

Following Simon Cowell’s announcement Monday (January 11) that he would be leaving “American Idol” at the end of the season to bring his hit U.K. talent show “The X Factor” to the U.S., rumors began swirling that former “Idol” judge Paula Abdul might join him at the new show’s judges’ table.
When reached for comment, Abdul’s rep told MTV News, “Just spoke with Paula. When the time is right we can have a conversation, and Paula is grateful to you for reaching out.”
Though Abdul’s future with “The X Factor” is unclear, plenty of career speculation has followed the famously upbeat judge since she announced her departure from “Idol” via Twitter on August 5.
That same day, former “Idol” producer and “So You Think You Can Dance” judge and executive producer Nigel Lythgoe told TV Guide that he would be inviting Abdul to “Dance,” adding that he’d wanted her on the show for years. “I’ve offered her a judge/choreographer [position] ever since season one, but of course, [Fox] said, ‘No, no, we can’t have her judging “So You Think You Can Dance” and “American Idol,” ‘ ” Lythgoe said. “So now, if she remains free from ‘Idol,’ she’s got no excuse.”
Abdul has yet to materialize on the dance show, though Lythgoe continues to tease a possible Abdul appearance, going so far as to display an empty chair marked with the name “Paul Abdul” during multiple episodes.
ABC President Stephen McPherson continued to stoke rumors a week after the announcement, saying he’d be happy to welcome Abdul to the cast of “Dancing With the Stars.” “We would love to have her on ‘Dancing,’ as a contestant, a participant or a judge. I think she’s a huge talent,” McPherson said. “I think there’s a lot made of her in terms of who she is. … There’s a sensitivity and an emotion to her that balances out ‘Idol,’ and we’d love to have a piece of that.”
Abdul has remained largely mum on the subject of her career plans, though she told TV Guide in late August that a talk show could be one potential avenue. “It would be a lot of fun variety with a ton of unexpected stuff and tributes to everyday people getting their big chance,” she said of the possible show.
In the wake of her departure, the former pop star has kept busy with several television appearances. In September, Abdul hosted “VH1 Divas,” featuring former “Idol” contestants Kelly Clarkson, Jordin Sparks and Jennifer Hudson. During the show’s opening, Abdul reminded the audience where they were, shouting, “This is not ‘American Idol’!” She also parodied her “Idol” replacement, comedian Ellen DeGeneres, donning a blond wig and suit and dancing in DeGeneres’ signature Converse sneakers.
Abdul made a two-episode guest appearance on the Lifetime series “Drop Dead Diva,” playing a fantasy version of herself on the September 13 and October 11 episodes, and also presented at the American Music Awards in November.
Up next, Abdul will appear in the dance documentary “Move,” along with dozens of other Hollywood and Broadway performers, dancers and choreographers, including Debbie Allen, Bebe Neuwirth and Lythgoe.

Chris Brown Shows ‘Fan Appreciation’ At New York Concert

NEW YORK — Chris Brown seemed a little contained Tuesday night at the Nokia Theatre stop of his Fan Appreciation Tour. Though he put on a clinic of showmanship, it was nothing like the huge, explosive shows to which he’s grown accustomed. (And nothing like the explosion caused by his decision earlier this week to delete his Twitter account.)
While some critics say it was too soon after Brown’s assault on Rihanna to put an album, let alone tour, the singer still has a sizeable fanbase that spans from grown grandma-age women to little children. Regardless of the size of the venue, Brown still had a sold-out concert in the world’s largest media market.
Brown started his show with his single “I Can Transform Ya” and proved that he is still holding the dance crown (at least for male entertainers — OK, Beyoncé fans?). His moves seemed so natural, the only proof that they were rehearsed was that the backup dancers were doing the same steps.
New York fan favorite — especially with the younger crowd — Juelz Santana came out for his Brown-assisted tune “Back to the Crib,” as the song’s producer, Polow Da Don, looked on from the soundboard area. Singer Esther Dean came out shortly after for her song with Chris, “Drop It Low.”
Breezy slowed down the pace for “Yo,” where the females in the audience sang along just about word for word. Brown playfully tossed his hat up in the air, teasing the crowd before he threw it out to the audience.
After “Take You Down,” Brown left to change his T-shirt, came back and let his DJ play records while the crowd sang along. When Young Money’s “Every Girl” came on, it was a little unsettling to see some of the younger kids at the show sing, “I wish I could f— every girl in the world.” Even Brown noticed.
“I said, sing the clean version, bunch of freak nasties!” he said. Chris later did a playful impression of R. Kelly singing “Bump N’ Grind.”
He got serious during a tribute to Michael Jackson featuring “Rock With You” and then “Billie Jean.” The standout in that section of the show was Brown and his dancers doing “Thriller.” The greatest video of all-time played on a huge screen while Brown and company performed the dance lock-step in sync with Jackson and his zombies.
Toward the end of the show, Brown thanked his fans, serenading them with slow jams “With You” and his current “Crawl.” Answering Brown’s call for help with the song, the ladies sang Jordin Sparks’ part on “No Air.” The closer was “Forever,” where once again Chris pulled out some fresh steps from his dance arsenal.

New Quail Lungs - "Dumb Dadadum"

Quail Lungs, aka Portland Oregonian Travis Bonilla, howls into his 4-track in a way that reminds me of a 20-something Daniel Higgs raised on a later (and more British) generation of punk, but the same deep countrified Americana. He has a two-song 7″ coming out via Dean Spunt’s PPM label. Spunt and Bonilla grew up together — elementary and high school, etc. — and played together in punk rock bands together when they were 14, 15, 16. Even if you didn’t know that, it’s clear he’s discovered his home-recorded Americana via DIY culture, etc. Or, in the press release, these questions get asked: “Do Quail Lungs like Syd Barret and large amounts of coffee? Do they like The Kinks enough to try them with Morphine?” Yes. Yes. Both tracks are great, but get started with A Side, “Dum Dadadum,” which manages a lonesome raucousness that’s as addictive as it is uproarious. (Later, let side B, “You Can’t Believe in Anything, You Can’t Believe in Nothing,” break your heart with its dusky keyboard tones and sunsetting harmonies.)

New Washed Out Video - "Belong"

The low-blood-pressure sample-based bedroom jams Washed Out poured out this year were grouped with others of their kind under various and competing genre labels, but the critical point was less about what to call it and more about what it recalled: nostalgia for the past (namely the ’80s) and all its trappings. And if that hasn’t yet been made sufficiently, this video directed by Blake Salzman (previously seen aiding Banjo Or Freakout) is directly on point, with VHS print, a tape decks (”Belong” first appeared on the High Times cassette, after all), awesomely ’80s video effects, aerobics, Nintendo, leotards. Chris Brown’s ‘I Can Transform Ya’ Moves Are ‘Mind-Blowing,’ Director Says

Chris Brown came back hard and fast in his video for “I Can Transform Ya.” The glossy, fast-paced clip, shot for two days last month in Hollywood, was the perfect chance for Joseph Kahn to work with the singer again after directing him in “Forever,” his upcoming “Crawl” clip and Ester Dean’s “Drop It Low.”
“I met with Chris when we were doing the ‘Drop It Low’ video, and he played me a couple tracks off his new album, and he already had a pretty clear idea of what he wanted out of ‘Transform Ya,’ ” Kahn told MTV News. “And, obviously, him going in there and dancing and turning into cars and trucks is right up my alley.”
Kahn said the video allowed the pair to display their love of all things “boy culture,” including fast cars and ninjas. “His interests, in terms of kung fu and special effects and science fiction and all the boy-culture stuff, it falls directly in line with what I like,” Kahn said. “So, we’re kind of a great match.”
While Brown has faced a lot of negative attention over the past year — pleading guilty to felony assault after a February incident with then-girlfriend Rihanna — Kahn doesn’t think that should take away from the 20-year-old’s talent. “I know there’s a lot of controversy with Chris,” he said. “I would never, ever work with him unless he was the person I thought he was and he is, truly. The person that controversy happened to and the person that I know — there’s a complete disconnect. Nothing can excuse all that stuff that happened, but everybody’s human. That’s a really big mistake, obviously, but he pays for [it] daily. When people say, ‘Has he been punished enough?’ Media crucifixion, check.”
Kahn was willing to set that controversy aside for a chance to reunite with Brown. “Look, Chris Brown is — I should flat out say it — is probably the most talented person I’ve ever worked with in my many years of doing music videos,” Kahn said. “His talent is phenomenal. I’m still struggling to try and capture that talent on film, and it’s a challenge. Here’s a guy who can literally do anything. If you watch this thing, he’s doing nunchuck tricks, and I’m a huge kung fu aficionado, and they’re mind-blowing. I’ve never seen stuff like that before in kung fu flicks.”
Kahn made sure to put Brown’s dance skills on display in the clip. “I would say it’s like a pure aesthetic dance video from the very fiber of it,” Kahn explained. “Everything dances onscreen. Everything has movement. Everything has a certain mechanical rhythm. He actually created a dance style for this that is mechanical. It’s sort of a hyper-intense version of the robot. Even the transformations go directly in line with the movements.”
Instead of taking the lyrics and being “pretentious” about it, Kahn wanted to show the audience exactly what Brown was singing about. “What if we just got ambitious and demonstrated the lyrics?” he said about the concept. “The trick is to do it in a creative way. Let’s try to display the lyrics and the feeling of the dance at the same time.”
