School of Seven Bells are no strangers to unplugging their instruments. Yesterday they stopped by KCRW for a live studio performance of stripped down, shimmery selections from their latest album Disconnect From Desire. Check out the podcast to discover the inspiration behind the title of the album. If you catch them on tour, you may hear the ethereal cover of Siouxsie and the Banshees’ “Kiss Them For Me” they played during soundcheck.

On the eve of being named to our 40 Best New Artists Of 2010 list, UK producer Gold Panda headlined Glasslands Gallery on Kent St. in Williamsburg, live-mixing the beat snatches and effects pedal switches of his often dazzling singles and EPs, along with a presumably good dose of the material from his anticipated forthcoming full-length debut Lucky Shiner. The set opened with the LP’s “You” and closed, as any Gold Panda set should from now until his next quantum leap, with “Quitters Raga.” Ryan Muir was on hand to shoot the night, capturing openers Pink Skull and Bikini along the way.
Bunch of Gold Panda MP3s here, Lucky Shiner’s out 10/12 via Ghostly.

A group of Radiohead fans used cheap Flip cameras to record the band’s Aug 23, 2009 show in Prague. Radiohead approved of the DIY concert film, and even provided the filmmakers with the soundboard recordings of the set. Now the concert film, simply called Prague DVD, is available for free download (though the site keeps going down from the overload). It’s in many formats (DVD, iPhone/iPad, PAL/NTSC, etc). And you can watch segments of the set via Youtube. Watch “The National Anthem” and a very sloppy “The Bends,” below, and download the whole thing here.

We saw him play “Hard Enough” live (without Lewis) at his debut solo show in Las Vegas, though with Lewis on backing vocals it really brings out how much this track sounds like Fleetwood Mac. Listen to this radio rip:

This is clever/cute: Miniature Tigers’s “Bullfighter Jacket” video is a moving Where’s Waldo book, with wizards, painters, and perverts among its dozens of characters. Director Morgan Krantz (who also did the band’s “Gold Skull” video), films everyone against a green lawn from above. Stitched together, it looks like a giant, detailed collage. (It also reminded me of Kanye West’s “Power” video.) Watch:

The last time we checked in with A. V. Club’s Undercover, there were four songs left and Swell Season chose take a shot at Neutral Milk Hotel’s “Two-Headed Boy.” When the Walkmen arrived, only one song remained, R.E.M.’s “Driver 8.” They had no choice, but it makes sense these are the folks who ended up handling Fables Of The Reconstruction.

Our last look at Okkervil River was via their collaboration with Roky Erickson. In this video shot at the Living Room in NYC, main man Will Sheff performs a new song, “Lay Of The Last Survivor.” He introduces it as “incredibly depressing,” but it’s more a mild downer.

Even though Rage Against the Machine really only makes news in my world because Phish just covered “Killing in the Name Of” on the Fourth of July, it is pretty rad that Zach and crew are still out to make new old music together to help support a cause they believe strongly in. Zach De La Rocha came out recently in major opposition to Arizona’s controversial SB 1070 and called on other musicians to join the call to boycott Arizona as a performer until the law gets thrown out. He’s staging what is likely the first of many boycott / protest concerts with the first set for Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl on July 23rd with fellow supporter Conor Oberst. Tickets will be going on sale this Monday at 10am.
