British electropop sensation La Roux have landed top spots on radio playlists all summer long with their smash-hit single “Bulletproof,” which has sold more than 1.5 million copies and is into its 24th week on the Billboard Hot 100. And Elly Jackson and company were eager to prove that Kevlar strength Stateside this summer, but she was forced to cancel a handful of dates due to bronchitis and then pharyngitis. But now she’s ready to return with a headlining U.S. tour in November.
The tour will last only for a brief 17 days, kicking off in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on November 1 before heading up the East Coast to conclude at New York’s Terminal 5.
La Roux have also announced that their single “In for the Kill” will be hitting U.S. radio stations within the next month. The track — for which they shot a video almost a year ago — has been generating a buzz since Skream’s “Let’s Get Ravey” remix of the song appeared on an episode of HBO’s “Entourage” earlier this month.
The tour dates for La Roux’s fall 2010 U.S. tour, according to their MySpace blog:
» 11/1 - Fort Lauderdale, FL @ Culture Room
» 11/2 - Orlando, FL @ Hard Rock
» 11/4 - Tampa, FL @ Ritz
» 11/5 - Atlanta, GA - Tabernacle

Victoria and Alex have always shined live — our first night with them was cross-legged under the Christmas lights of Cake Shop during CMJ four years ago, where the small but stuff room of critics were instantly converted — though on the back of Teen Dream their more dynamic trio setup, bringing live drums to the mix, they’ve proven to be a festival charmer as well as tiny LES basement dreamweavers. So it’s nice there’s this new live EP released as a document to the effect of their in-person personnel expansion, released exclusively for iTunes and produced by Chris Coady. It spans six tracks, featuring four from Teen Dream, Devotion’s “Gila,” and this new one, “White Moon.” Hear the fresh one here:

It’s not surprise that social media has really changed the way many artists can make a living these days. Take for instance the case of Nathan Moore, the solo artist and frontman for Surprise Me Mr. Davis — the man has been able to organize a Bay Area “tour” in the matter of 36 hours after he flew out to California to play the Mystic Garden Party…
When he flew in to perform at an established festival in California this past weekend and discovered most of the main artists had pulled out for fear of not being paid, he did what Nathan Moore does best – he jumped in with both feet. “I think they need me,” he told his manager when discussing the options. So, he went, knowing that like most artists struggling to make ends meet on tour he risked losing money yet again. The festival meltdown illustrates the impact of hard times on festivals, musicians and fans alike, and Moore’s attitude shows he takes his role as everybody’s troubadour to heart.
I love the spontanaiety of it all and it’s cool to see Nathan has some friends up here in the Bay Area to help him stay busy this week and recoup some of his plane ticket and transportation costs coming out West. I’ll be at the Yankee on Friday night barring any unforeseen changes in that plan.

HOW YOU FEELIN?!? Michael Franti & Spearhead are back on the road again this summer to support their new album, The Sound of Sunshine, due out on August 24th. I haven’t caught these guys live in quite a long time, but their good vibes and positive spirit are definitely something we would support (even if it comes off a bit cheesy at times). Let’s all quit being jaded critics, anyway. This band is all about getting people to move their feet and have a good time, and we’re all about that spirit these days. The band will be headlining their first show at the Greek Theater in Berkeley this Friday night. Anyone hitting the show?

San Diego death-rockers Blessure Grave have impressed me for awhile with their dead-on sing-along hooks. I’m a sucker for goth dramatics, but more important than the scowl or Death In June, Sex Gang Children, Warsaw, and Christian Death references, Toby Grave writes great songs that go places not every guy with an army of black shirts can take you. In November I posted the duo’s “Stranger In The House” — mentioning it was a demo from an album they hadn’t finished recording — and made passing reference to the Adam Grabarnick-directed video for an older track, “Open Or Shut.” Today we have a straightforward, shadowy, and somehow easily compelling Adam Grabarnick-directed clip for this early version of “Stranger In The House” as well as the details for a single of the same name.
A couple of weeks ago we posted “My House,” a breezy track set to appear on Ganglians’ next record. Adding to the pile, here are two previously unheard songs captured live on 5/11 at the Waaga Records building in the band’s Sacramento hometown for Terroreyes.tv. One’s called “Jungle.” And one’s called “Fast Song.” You would be able to tell them apart even without the graphics. Sean Stout handled the video, Brittney Leigh the sound. There’s a Butthole Surfers vibe on a couple of levels.
The Mary Onettes dropped this wistful ’80s-stemmed gem on us a month ago, offer up its visual counterpart today. Despite its title there are no nights, and no funerals, here; instead its meaning derives from the locations where Mary Onettes bassist/video star Henrick Ekström smokes his cigarettes, gets winded playing football, finds his instruments as if on some loveless musical scavenger hunt. We’re told:
All the places you see in the video have ties to [singer and video director Philip Ekström] and his brother Henrik’s childhood. The forest that you see is the forest where Philip hung out with the association “Friluftsfrämjandet” every Saturday for eight years. The football pitch is located just around the corner from the house where they grew up in. The beach was where they used to go in the summer when they were kids. The apartment where Henrik picks up a guitar is their granmother’s old apartment.
Onetime Outsiders Ganglians have remained comfortably on those outskirts even after a pair of Woodsist releases, a Captured Tracks single, and the attendant groupings that come with these sorts of associations. The psychedelic Sacramento crew offer another breezy gem with “My House,” a track that’ll appear on their next record.
