The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive

How sweet it is: 2010 is here, and the Mixtape Daily family promises you we will have our most productive year. We already have a ton of exclusive content in the cooker. And we’re starting off by getting to the heart of a much talked-about matter: Timbaland and Jay-Z.

Ever since the Tim-produced tracks from The Blueprint 3 leaked, people have been speculating about whether the two had problems. But the producer himself has a conspiracy theory about the leaks.

“There’s no beef between us,” Tim expressed to us not too long ago, admitting that the two had a serious talk about the premature release of songs the two collaborated on, most notably a record called “Rumors” that also featured Keri Hilson.

Aaliyah: Remembering Her Legacy Eight Years On

On the eighth anniversary of her untimely death, we look back on her accomplishments and wonder what might have been.
By Jayson Rodriguez

Aaliyah

Photo: Dave Allocca/Getty Images

One of the last hits from Aaliyah’s all-too-brief career was the track “More Than a Woman,” released posthumously from her self-titled third LP.

The song and the video both showcased Aaliyah Dana Haughton, then 22, at her finest: flirty, reserved, sultry and, most importantly, it left listeners and viewers with a palpable sense that there was indeed more to come from this talented artist. Unfortunately, her life was tragically cut short when a plane carrying her and her entourage crashed shortly after takeoff. Her death — which occurred exactly eight years ago — still feels like it happened entirely too soon.

Ever since the Detroit singer and dancer debuted in 1994 with Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number, we all watched Aaliyah blossom. Her initial look of dark sunglasses and baggy clothes evolved into a more adult look on her next album, One In a Million. She was always beautiful, but later as a young woman she exuded the kind of appeal that was as sexy as a whisper in your ear — so subtle that it never had to be overtly pointed out.

She also possessed the type of talent and charisma that led many to believe her future was as bright as a supernova.

“Aaliyah was one of the finest young women I have ever worked with. She was a consummate professional, an amazing talent with limitless potential and, most importantly, an exceptional person,” Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who worked with the singer on the film “Romeo Must Die,” said in a statement after her death. “Her passing is a huge loss to her many friends here at Warner Bros. and we extend our heartfelt sympathy to her family and to those who loved her as we did.”

Her credits are easy to remember: three albums that were each certified double-platinum along with the aforementioned “Romeo Must Die,” which helped to put her on Hollywood’s map. Another film, “Queen of the Damned,” was released after she passed.

Her legacy is slinkier — immense yet understated, just like her voice. Traces of it lie the way Ciara moved in the video for “Promise.” It’s there in Rihanna’s runway-fashion sense.
Keri Hilson’s around-the-way persona and Nicole Scherzinger’s simmering sexuality share a debt to her. And the sense of what her career could have ultimately become is evident in Beyoncé’s multimedia presence.

During Aaliyah’s rise, she and her contemporaries shared a number of similarities, most notably an affinity for going by just one name: Brandy, Monica, Mya, etc. All of them did well from the very beginning. Since then, of course, they’ve continued to experience success, but each with the usual ups and downs that fame tends to dish out. Aaliyah undoubtedly would have gone on to accomplish more.

But she always felt different, more mature than her age — and her ascent also felt more gradual and firm, and when she passed there was a sadness that resonated because she was set to soar.

“I’ll be more than a lover, more than a woman,” she sang. “I’m gonna be more. I don’t think you’re ready.”

There truly was no way we could have been.

Asher Roth Gets Deep Into Character In ‘She Don’t Wanna Man’ Video

‘This is a real party; it’s not one of those fake video parties,’ Roth laughs of clip, featuring Keri Hilson.

Photo: MTV News

Being that he’s a Video Music Award-nominated artiste,
Asher Roth takes his craft very seriously. Which is why, when MTV News visited the set of his “She Don’t Wanna Man” clip — which premiered Monday (August 24) on MTV — we found him tucked away in a corner, eyes closed, getting deep into character. It’s called method acting, in case you were wondering.

Actually, we’re kidding. We told you he takes his craft seriously.

“This is a real party; it’s not one of those fake video parties,” Roth laughed. “A lot of the scenes are back and forth, boys versus girls. But we still chase after some booty, you know?”

The video — which features Roth and company traipsing through a packed club, macking on (and spectacularly failing with) assorted females — also boasts a cameo by
Keri Hilson (she gives Roth no play either), an old Asher associate who sings the track’s hook.

“When we put ‘She Don’t Wanna Man’ together, we pretty much put together your dream-team list of artists that you would love to collaborate with on that song. After all, Roth — who’s up for two Moonmen at the VMAs (Best Hip-Hop Video and Best New Artist) — is quickly becoming an old pro when it comes to making videos. And if there’s one thing he’s learned early on, it’s that shooting them should be as fun as possible.

“Keri is an absolute honor to have around. She’s a beauty. She’s so cool. For those who don’t know her, she’s legitimately a great human being,” he said. “So we’re just happy to hang out. On Tuesday (March 24), Keri Hilson finally gets to release her debut album, In a Perfect World…. The sexy singer said the date has great karma because fellow Atlanta native Usher dropped his Confessions LP five years ago this week. He sold a few copies — i.e. a few million! — of that one. Hilson says the wait for putting out her record, which was supposed to come out last year, is well worth it. The delays gave her ample opportunity to make sure everything came out to her liking.

“It’s kind of been a little Detox-y,” Hilson laughed, comparing the wait for her debut to Dr Dre’s years-in-the-making LP. Keri and the Doc share a similar trait.

“I’m just a perfectionist,” she said. “I have had many [release dates], but it’s all for a good cause. The label wants to make sure the album has its proper release, and I’m thankful for that. Very grateful, even though fans look at it like it’s a bad thing.”

Perfect World… is packed with power players, from Lil Wayne, Keyshia Cole and Ne-Yo to its two main producers, Polow Da Don and Timbaland.

“Polow absolutely leans towards urban-sounding records like ‘Turnin’ Me On,’ ” she said. “Timbaland leans towards the ‘Energy’-sounding records, the more world music. I’m always in the middle, and I mean that businesswise and creatively. Because when Polow brings me a more urban-sounding record, I bring it back to the middle and go a little pop with it. When Timbaland brings me a world track, I pull out something emotional and raw. I’m always the balance between those two. It works for us. They’re polar opposites and I’m in the middle.”

Although both beat masters were working toward a common cause, Hilson said they didn’t want to get outshined by the other.

“It’s a silent battle between the two of them,” she smiled. “It’s just a natural, they both wanna give their best, and I’m very glad that two of the great producers have come together on my project. Of course, I’m their baby and they want to give me their best. I’m in the middle like, ‘Thank you, Lord.’ ”

Hilson slowed down her writing for other artists to concentrate on the new album, but now that it’s in stores, she’s unleashing her pen again.
