The good times began to end as the ’80s drew to a close, as both Haim and Feldman struggled with drug addiction — Feldman was arrested in 1990 when, after a traffic stop, police found heroin in his possession — and both men underwent very public stints in rehabilitation facilities. These days, we’re well-versed in such tumbles (everyone from Britney Spears to Lindsay Lohan has clocked a stint in rehab), but back then, this was huge news: Stars rarely melted down to this degree, or at least they didn’t do it while the rest of the world watched.

As stories of his drug use continued to spread, Haim’s movie roles began to dry up. He starred in a series of direct-to-video films, including “Blown Away” (alongside Feldman), and “Oh ,What a Night,” and was in and out of rehab — according to some reports, he logged more than 15 stints in drug-treatment facilities. In 2001, he was rushed to the UCLA Medical Center in Santa Monica after reportedly suffering a drug-induced stroke.

He eventually moved back to his native Toronto, got sober and in 2007, signed on to do “The Two Coreys,” an A&amp;E reality show that detailed his personal struggles, his relationship with Feldman, and the trials and tribulations the two endured during the making of “Lost Boys: The Tribe,” a sequel to the 1987 film. It appeared that a comeback was in the works, though, as it turned out, Haim was only briefly featured in the movie, and “Coreys” was canceled midway through its second season.

“Apparently, he was fired during [production of the film], was doing drugs and didn’t show up. This town can be extremely cold, and you lose your friends easily. And when you’re a drug addict, no one wants anything to do with you,” Poland said. “Couple that with the fact that, on some level, every actor does what he or she does because they want the attention, which is why, when he decided to get better, he did it on TV, which is almost impossible to do.”

Haim did continue to work, however, and at the time of his death, he had several films in production. And while his films of the 1980s have certainly earned him a permanent place in pop-culture lore, it’s everything that happened to him since — his fall, his struggles, his comeback — that resonates most clearly these days. Because we have seen (and still are seeing) the stars of today battle with the same demons, take the same tumbles, and attempt the same comebacks. Even Haim realized this and took great sorrow in his inability to control his situation.

“It’s like seeing a young male me, or a female me … I feel for them. Travis McCoy Says New Album Is ‘Music To Have A Good Time To’

‘Now a lot of the records are happy,’ Gym Class Heroes frontman says.
By James Montgomery

Travis “Travie” McCoy

First things first: Travis McCoy wants to be known as “Travie” these days. After all, that’s how he’s always been known amongst his family and friends.

“I mean, anybody who knows me already calls me that. No one in my circle calls me Travis. Even my family, at a young age started calling me ‘Travie,’ ” he said, cracking up slightly. “So I want people to feel comfortable calling me ‘Travie.’ It’s almost like inviting people in. You can be part of the family, so long as you buy the album.”

And that brings us to the second point — his long-in-the-works solo album, which McCoy wants you to know is no longer called The Lazarus Project, for legal reasons … involving Paul Walker.

“Unfortunately we had to change the title to just Lazarus, because there’s already this movie out there called ‘The Lazarus Project,’ ” he explained. “So we’re just calling the record Lazarus now. It’s more to the point.”

And all this talk of labels, nicknames and titles is sort of relevant to McCoy in general. Because ever since he burst onto the scene with Gym Class Heroes (McCoy and the band are currently at work on a new LP), people have struggled to slap a label on the charismatic frontman. Is he a rapper? A rock star? Something in between? Certainly GCH’s hip-hop leaning 2008 album The Quilt didn’t help matters any and now, with Lazarus on the horizon (it’s tentatively due in June), McCoy is facing another round of critical labeling. And yes, it’s a bit annoying.

“It’s hard to put a stamp on the record. With anything I do, it’s hard to categorize it. With any project, I just go in and blindly start writing songs and then find out which way we want to go with it. This one took a bit longer to find the lane,” he said. “It was a year in the making. … We thought we had found the lane, then I started doing other sh–. Now that it’s done and I’ve listened to it a bunch of times, I’ll say that it’s got a pop appeal … the songs will appeal to a broader range of people as opposed to the hip-hop crowd or conventional GCH crowd.”

Initially, the songs on Lazarus reflected the dark times in McCoy’s life … inspired mainly by his breakup with longtime girlfriend Katy Perry. “A lot of the music started off pretty dark and introspective, but now a lot of the records are happy. And that’s sort of the balance McCoy is striking on Lazarus — a little bit of the serious, a little bit of the social, but, of course, a whole lot fun, too. The independent release will be his first album not coming through Roc-A-Fella records.

“It was mutual,” Bleek said about not signing with Hov’s Roc Nation and choosing to go independent. “It was a conversation … I was asking him his next move. “My thing is, what’s the purpose?” Bleek said about Sigel’s outburst. “You said all you had to say. You said you wasn’t gonna say no more until Jay called you. “For it to come out the blue like this, it was like, ‘Oh, this is what you really was thinking?’ ” Bleek said. “When Ice Cube left N.W.A, it was automatic dis records. With all that has transpired lately, Bleek said the chances of mending any fences with Sig are less than bleak.

“Could it ever be mended? Jay is gone,” Bleek said. “I could sit down with Beans. You wanna holla with me, he knows how to get in contact with me.
