MTV News exclusively received a coy of a new Lloyd single. It’s called “Set Me Free” and features Mystikal. It’s Mystikal’s first song since going to jail for sexual assault six years ago. The MC was released in January.

“The N.O. is gonna love me for this one,” Lloyd said. “The world is gonna love me for that song. It is the first of many [singles]. “I had two major goals in 2009,” he added. “One was to get off the Inc., which I did. The other was to get back on radio and TV, which I did with ‘Bedrock.’ ”

His plan for 2010 is laid flat as well.

“Signing with Interscope was just a small step,” the Atlanta transplant offered. “This year I’m really focused on a classic album and staying in the public eye with more guest features. On Thursday night, “American Idol” revealed its Top 12 finalists for the ninth season of the hit show. MTV News “Idol” expert Jim Cantiello whipped up a handy cheat sheet for each finalist, breaking down each candidate’s journey thus far. Lee Dewyze

With angsty rock vocals and a troubled-youth past, Lee Dewyze is the brooding bad boy of this “Idol” season. Lee’s weathered voice shares traits with rock superstars like Chad Kroeger and Daughtry, which might explain why the judges are especially supportive of Dewyze’s “Idol” journey.

Best Performance: Simon may have loved Lee’s “Chasing Cars,” but we thought his unexpected take on Owl City’s “Fireflies”
showed more promise. Plus, it was the only time the former paint salesman looked like he was having fun onstage.

Weakest Performance: Dewyze struggled to stay on pitch during Hinder’s “Lips of an Angel.” He also struggled to keep his pants up, making him look like a low-level amateur.

Tragic Backstory: We found out last week that Lee was kicked out of public school … for something. In a sincere interview package, Dewyze pointed to music (and his teachers) as an inspiration to change his troubled ways.

Why He Will Win: Lee’s voice is a slam dunk for radio, and the only thing “Idol” fans like more than voting for their fave is to see their fave’s music move up the charts. It appears Simon Cowell has picked Lee to be his pet project, too, yet he talks about him as if he’s the dark horse of the season. A dark horse who’s also getting plugged by Cowell? It seems foolproof! Finally, Dewyze is starting to attract a heavily female cougar fanbase, and it wouldn’t be the first time those ladies have pushed a dude to the top of the heap.

Why He Will Lose: Lee’s constant battle with pitch may prevent him from ever having a true “moment.”

What He Should Sing: If given the chance, Dewyze should return to the modern rock format, but deviate from vocalists who share a similar rasp. How about the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Under the Bridge”?

On His Least Favorite Performance, “Chasing Cars”: “I was so nervous and [the judges] said I was pitchy and I knew I was. It was nerve-wracking, you know? And I looked at myself and was like, ‘What are you doing?’ But I’m kind of one of those guys that just gets up there and jams.”

Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page, where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.

Photo: Interscope

Lady Gaga’s splashy “Telephone” video premiered Thursday night. The nearly 10-minute clip, which co-stars Beyoncé, is epic. It has amazing costumes, and it also has Lady Gaga naked. It was everything the singer said it would be. It was, as the Haus of Gaga recently declared it, “a masterpiece.”

Judging by the comments on MTVNews.com, it seems that Gaga’s little monsters agree with the Haus about the quality of the clip. “I thought the video for ‘Telephone’ was great. Jhonny loved the video the first time and every time since that he’s seen it. “LOVE IT. OMG. It was so comical at the same time too. I was laughing a lot and she was so fierce with her makeup,” he wrote. “I first watched it and was like, huh? But watch it three more times and you’ll see you missed things you didn’t see the first time. Her sister is also in there btw for like a second, and it was just funny and she outdid herself again.”

But this is only the beginning; she’ll get greater as she goes on.”

Perhaps CityBoyfromNY summed it up best for Gaga fans when he wrote, “Who needs crack when you have Lady Gaga!!!!”

Alex Lambert performs on “American Idol”

Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images

While Alex Lambert’s nerves got the best of him during his early “American Idol” performances, the singer seemed to be getting on the right track, choosing perfect-fit songs by Ray LaMontagne and John Legend.

Unfortunately, Lambert fell victim to Thursday’s shocking results night and didn’t quite make the top 12. We caught up with him Friday (March 12) to talk about his surprise elimination, what’s next and much more.

They all know I have a good voice, and they told me I had a lot of future ahead of me.

Q: The judges have made a big deal about the contestants knowing what kind of artist they want to be. Do you know?

A: I know exactly what kind of artist I want to be. I really would like to do a bunch of acoustic stuff and I would also like some R&amp;B tracks — a whole bunch of different stuff. I know my voice and what I can and cannot do, and I know what would sound good on what, and I believe that I could sound good on not only one genre of music; I could put it on anything.

Q: What helped you through the nerves? Did the judges help or your friends or …

A: I would say it was all me. The only person who was going to help me overcome my nervousness and my stage fright was me, and it was all in my head. I could have gone up there and had a great performance, but in my head, I was thinking to nail the song vocally, and I wasn’t really worried about performing, I guess. I never thought that the show was so much of a performing show as a singing competition. I had it in my head so much, like, “I want my vocals to be so much better than everyone else’s.” And I guess that’s all. I lost track of the fact that this is a TV show.

Q: When the show came back from commercial after you were eliminated, things looked pretty emotional. What was going on?

A: A lot of people were talking to me and, yeah, it was emotional, because a lot of people weren’t expecting the people that went home to go home. There’s people in the top 12 that everyone thought was going home, and then when they found out it was me, that whole day I was nervous, and people were like, “Dude, why are you nervous? You have no reason to be nervous. You’re going to be here.” And then when I got cut, they were just like, “What?!?” And a lot of people that were upset were like, “I made it and he didn’t?”

Q: Do you think if you’d made it to the top 12 you would have been encouraged to cut off your mullet?

A: [Laughs.] The stylists have already asked me if I wanted to cut it. I mean, even if they did tell me to — yeah, they probably would want me to cut it, but I wouldn’t let them cut it. I wouldn’t ever let them cut my mullet.

Q: What did you think of Ellen’s constant banana metaphors?

A: [Laughs.] Well, I mean, I know it’s all for entertainment, but it does make sense, I guess. I mean, I probably won’t be able to look at a banana the same way.

Were you sad to see Alex go? Will you listen to his post-”Idol” music? Let us know!

Katelyn Epperly Had ‘Pride Issues’ With Being On ‘American Idol’

‘A talent competition is not necessarily my thing,’ she says.
By Katie Byrne

Katelyn Epperly performs on “American Idol”

Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images

Katelyn Epperly finally had a breakout “American Idol” performance last week with Coldplay’s “The Scientist,” even though the judges didn’t see eye-to-eye on it. But the whole panel agreed that her take on Carole King’s “I Feel the Earth Move” didn’t live up to her potential.

Even so, Epperly wasn’t expected to get the boot on Thursday, but such was the theme of the shocking results night, when Lilly Scott, Alex Lambert and Todrick Hall were also sent packing. We caught up with the singer/songwriter to talk about her closest “Idol” allies, her next move and more.

Q: Did you feel that the judges were especially hard on you this season?

A: They were definitely more critical towards me. I’m not sure if it’s possibly because I’ve been performing for so long. Maybe they expected more out of me than what I was giving them. But I started off on a pretty strong note, so maybe I didn’t live up to their expectations week by week.

Q: Did you sing “I Feel the Earth Move” to compensate for Simon’s “corny” comments the week before?

A: I totally did. I definitely was trying to find a song that would portray me as an artist, which is difficult for a singer/songwriter in this competition, because first of all, I don’t listen to mainstream music, and second of all, I don’t typically perform covers. So I kind of scrambled around last-minute trying to do something. I brought out the Wurlitzer keyboard .I wanted to do something edgier, and it didn’t work out for me, but I definitely don’t regret doing it, because I love that era.

Q: You and Lilly seemed especially emotional during the results show. Why was that?

: Lilly and I have gotten really close, and from the start, we’ve flocked together. Crystal [Bowersox] too. I don’t typically hang out with girls very often, so this was a rare thing for all three of us, actually. To really truly have female friends and to get along so well and to be so supportive of one another and turning and seeing them there — for me, it wasn’t over. This is sort of a platform in my career. I wasn’t so sad about that; I was sad to see them, and I’m gonna say it was a pretty big disappointment to me to see Lilly go home, because if I were to be at home watching that show, she would, by far, over all the other girls, not be the one going home.

Q: What made you choose “The Scientist” last week?

: It’s definitely a song that comes to mind when I think about anything hard I’ve had to do, any sort of loss. It’s a very touching, riveting song. I covered it a lot this summer and coped with a lot of things that I was going through. This is a song that is sad but also hopeful. When they said it was too slow, that was OK with me. I was waiting for that comment. I wanted to do it slow. I wanted to focus on the lyrics of the song. The song just cries, and I think I portrayed it, despite what the judges might have thought.

Q: Are you especially rooting for anyone now that you’re off the show?

A: I wish them all well, because I’ve gotten to know them all, and everyone’s worked so hard. Honestly, from the start, Crystal has been a very true, true friend to me and an honest person. And when she sings, it comes from the heart, and I know you’ve watched her. It’s just natural for her, and she totally deserves it. I’m going to be pushing for her all the way.

Q: Was it comforting to you for there to be so many other singer/songwriters in the competition this season?

A: I think that’s very important. That’s actually what made me so much more OK with being on the show, because I did have some pride issues with it at first, because a talent competition is not necessarily my thing. I’m the kind of person who just likes to sing and dance and spend time with music instead of making it something competitive. I’ve seen so many singer/songwriters this year who really are credible and who have been working at it their whole lives and truly deserve it. They didn’t just roll out of bed one day and want to be on a TV show and have an OK voice and a pretty face. So it was really fun to sit around backstage while we were rehearsing. We got to just jam out together. We’d all pass around the guitar and sing. It was awesome.

: Would you have liked to sing your original songs on the show, if that were an option?

A: That’s a tough one. It would be really awesome because I feel like people like Lilly, Crystal and I and others, we would definitely excel in that kind of category. At the same time, it is a show where you get judged. It’s really hard, because original music, especially the music I write, is filled with a lot of emotion and it’s based on personal experiences, and I think it would be hard for me to get up in front of four people and for them to tell me my personal experiences are invalid and my song that I wrote when I was going through a hard time wasn’t good enough. So its mixed and matched, but I definitely think it would be a cool twist to bring to a show and really bring to light some of those true musicians.

Q: What’s next? Will you head back to Iowa?

: I am planning on going back for now, since I’m flat broke. [Laughs.] I gotta go back to Des Moines and start working and continue to pursue recording and writing music with all sorts of different artists. The band called Lovedrug is a band I’ve been listening to since I was real young. Jay-Z Shouts Out Notorious B.I.G. During Nets Groundbreaking Event

‘We did it again, Brooklyn,’ Jay says in reference to Biggie’s Source Awards speeches.
By Shaheem Reid

Leave it to Jay-Z. On Thursday, Hov was in Brooklyn at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Barclays Center, the future home of the New Jersey Nets, the NBA team he co-owns. When it was Jay’s time to speak, not only did he tell the crowd — which included Beyoncé, the Reverend Al Sharpton and the mayor and governor of New York — about the realizations of his own dreams, but Jigga also shouted out the other half of “Brooklyn’s Finest.”

“What I stand here and represent is hope for Brooklyn, New York City. I’m a son of Brooklyn, I’m from Marcy projects,” Jay said. “I think about growing up in Brooklyn in the Marcy projects and shooting jump shots, thinking I can make it to the NBA. Now I stand here as an owner of a team that’s coming back to Brooklyn. The pride in that, and bringing that dream so much closer for people, brings me so much pride I get a little nervous about it. But I’m very happy, very excited about this day. And we did it again, Brooklyn — shout-out to [Notorious] B.I.G.”

Crystal Bowersox

Crystal Bowersox is as obvious a choice for “American Idol” as Ellen DeGeneres. The Ohio native seems like she’d be more at home on AM Radio circa 1976 than a highly rated reality competition. But somehow, the dreadlocked singer/songwriter has captured the imagination of “Idol” viewers and judges alike with her so-retro-it’s-cool-again vibe and fish-out-of-water attitude.

Best Performance: Bowersox wowed with a passionate gospel-tinged “Long As I Can See the Light”by Creedence Clearwater Revival, made all the more poignant and emotional thanks to a headline-grabbing health scare that almost resulted in the show’s first-ever medical disqualification. But her recent Tracy Chapman cover gave us even more reasons to chant “BOWERSOX! BOWERSOX!”

Weakest Performance: Alanis Morissette’s “Hand in My Pocket” seemed like a good idea at the time. The song fit her troubadour aesthetic and she got to flaunt her harmonica skills. (Take that, Taylor Hicks!) But it ended up feeling too predictable and safe, leaving Simon to gripe that there are thousands of street performers doing the same thing all over America. Ouch.

Sad Backstory: After last week’s dramatic hospital visit, Crystal’s struggle with diabetes made its way into her narrative on the show. And like fellow front-runner Andrew Garcia, Bowersox is the parent of an adorable toddler.

Why She Will Win: Bowersox recalls past “Idol” fan favorites like Jason Castro and Bo Bice, yet she’s been able to carve out an identity all her own. Why She Will Lose: Bowersox had never watched “Idol” before, so she may be thrown for a loop when she’s expected to sing a disco tune or a Broadway number. What She Should Sing: To help Crystal avoid turning into a ’70s jukebox cliché, she should attempt a current hit. A slow, thoughtful, acoustic take on Pink’s “Don’t Leave Me” could do just the trick.

On Being Considered The Front-runner: “It’s flattering. I’m not letting anything go to my head, though. Stat Quo Working With Dr. Dre On Detox, Readying Own Album

Stat Quo says he doesn’t know exactly when, but Dr. Dre is definitely going to drop Detox. It’s not a myth. Stat has been writing on the project for several months.

“It’s definitely gonna come out,” the Atlanta native said of Dre’s long-awaited project. “I always said it was gonna come out in 2010 light years ago. I also at one point thought it would never come out. Being around Dre and the energy that’s being created, all I can say is that it’s incredible. It’s totally left-field from what’s going on — I really appreciate what he’s doing as an artist. Even though from the outside looking in, if I’m other people, I’ll be like, ‘What’s taking him so long?’ But it’s gonna be worth every second, every hour, every minute. Every week, every year we waited for the album.

“The songs I’ve heard since I’ve been around are all really special,” he continued. “It’s so important to hip-hop that this record comes. It’s our saving grace. A lot of the radio stations are going rhythmic and going away from certain types of urban music. You can only go to contemporary stations to get certain soul-type music. The whole platform is changing. Kenna

Photo: MTV News

In 2005, Kenna — who had long heard stories of the majesty and mystery of Mt. Kilimanjaro from his father — decided to climb the peak. He made it to Kosovo Camp, a clearing located some 16,000 feet above sea level (and still 3,000 feet from the summit), and then pushed onward toward the top of the mountain. He didn’t make it.

Five years later, he decided to make the trek again, this time in the hope of calling attention to the global clean-water crisis. Both the trip and the cause were personal to Kenna, because when his father was a child in Ethiopia, he lost his brother and friends to water-borne diseases and, as he put it, “I could have been one of those kids.”

So, in January, with a crew of nearly 300 backing him up — including fellow musicians Lupe Fiasco and Santigold, actors Jessica Biel, Emile Hirsch and Isabel Lucas, plus a team of scientists, United Nations ambassadors and skilled guides — he headed back up the mountain. (His friend Justin Timberlake intended to join the trek but couldn’t due to scheduling conflicts; Justin introduces the film.) And their trip is documented in “Summit on the Summit: Kilimanjaro,” a 90-minute film that premieres Sunday (March 14) at 9 p.m. ET on MTV.

And apart from detailing the group’s massive of scaling Africa’s tallest mountain, the film also contains a symbolic message, one that applies not just to the trek, but to tackling seemingly insurmountable issues like global clean water: that together, we can accomplish great things.

“When you go by yourself and you’re on a solo mission, it’s not necessarily something that registers at the end of the day. No one has your back. Getting to the top of Kilimanjaro this time had everything to do with the fact that I had an army with me,” Kenna told MTV News. “Some of us would literally look at each other and say, ‘If you weren’t here, I wouldn’t have made it.’ Our director, Mike Bonfiglio, was basically watching Isabel Lucas, and saw her dedication when she was really, really ill at the top of this mountain. And he, literally, was like ‘She made it, I’ve got to do this.’ ”

Unlike his previous attempt, this time around, Kenna would not be denied in his quest to make it to the peak of Kilimanjaro. He had made his mind up, and he wouldn’t be denied: because he had friends with him, and because he knew there were millions of people depending on him to spread his message.

“I think what happened is our medic told us, ‘You know what?
