Aubrey O’Day Opens Up About Her Sexuality: ‘I Think It’s Funny That So Many People Care’

Ex-Danity Kane star will have big news to announce next week!
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias

Aubrey O’Day

Photo: MTV News

Aubrey O’Day certainly doesn’t mind courting controversy, particularly with regard to her sexuality. The former Danity Kane star recently suggested that she’s bisexual, and rumors continue to fly that she posed for an upcoming issue of Playboy. Among many other things, she opened up about her sexuality during a recent sit-down with MTV News.

“I think it’s funny that so many people care,” O’Day said. “I mean, half the time, I don’t even know who I’m gonna love or what I’m gonna feel comfortable exposing myself to.”

The rumors about O’Day’s bisexuality started to spread after she began hitting parties with girls on her arm. And for a woman who thrives on attention, O’Day admitted that the attention does make her a bit self-conscious. “I think [the fact] that so many people are wondering along with me definitely puts pressure on my choices!” she said.

“But one thing that I have to say about me that’s really always gonna be true, whether people like it or not, is I’m just gonna be me.”

It’s a sentiment that she shared with the world on the “Making the Band” finale, after Diddy kicked her out of the group. “I’m gonna be real. I’m not gonna do anything because people want me to. I’m not gonna hide something about me.”

Now that she’s quite publicly trying to figure all this out, both professionally and personally, that openness isn’t something she plans on changing anytime soon. “I’ve never gone into an interview in my life and said that we can’t talk about something,” she said. “I’ve seen since I’ve been in this industry, probably most of the people that I’m around do that. I don’t wanna be that person. I don’t wanna be someone who can’t talk about who they are — the good and the bad.”

And as long as people understand that, she doesn’t mind being talked about.

“I just want to be real,” she said. “I think we’re missing a lot of real people, and just the idea that you can be real and be comfortable with that. No judgment here.’ I want it to be me.”

We’ll have lots more from our interview with Aubrey O’Day in the coming days — and be sure to check back on Wednesday the 14th, when we’ll have some big news!

Jaydiohead DJ Says He’d Love Feedback From Jay-Z Or Radiohead

‘I would be speechless if I heard from any of them,’ Minty Fresh Beats tells MTV News.

DJ Minty Fresh Beats as a toddler

Photo: Max Tannone

Last week, Max Tannone was a 22-year-old employee of an NYC post-production company who dabbled in making beats. Then he combined the powers of Jay-Z and Radiohead on his MySpace page. And suddenly, things changed.

Overnight, Tannone became Minty Fresh Beats, creator of the Net’s most-buzzed-about album (aside from, you know, Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavilion), a 38-minute mash-up of tracks from Jay and Radiohead that he dubbed Jaydiohead. The album — which he made available for download at Jaydiohead.com — quickly made the rounds on message boards and music blogs, earning praise (and a few mean-spirited jabs too) and making Tannone a minor celebrity in the process. All of which he finds rather surreal.

“Ever since I was 16, I’ve been making beats and remixing different a cappellas and instrumentals into original songs, but I was just doing that for fun,” Tannone told MTV News on Tuesday (January 6). “I always just sort of used the name ‘Minty Fresh Beats,’ even though it doesn’t really mean anything. About a year ago, I did an early mix of Jay-Z’s ‘Pray’ with Radiohead’s ‘I Might Be Wrong,’ and I just put it up on my MySpace page, and it just sat there. So in August of last year, Tannone began working on what would become the Jaydiohead album — “I was like, ‘F— it, it’s something for me to do. He insists the goal was never to get famous, but “just to have people like it.”

“I didn’t want people to see it as a promotional vehicle, like, ‘Oh, here’s my résumé!’ or something like that, but if they liked what they heard, and it led to more [music] production work, then I was all for it,” he explained. “I knew the idea of a mash-up has been done to death, but I wanted to restructure these songs, to give them new choruses and make them sound like new songs. And though Tannone claims he has no idea how many times Jaydiohead has been downloaded through his site (he doesn’t host it, or something to that effect), he said that a quick Google search turned up Russian, Spanish and French music blogs writing about the album. Now all that’s left is for one of his subjects — either Jay or the guys in Radiohead — to reach out to him, and he said that his impromptu musical career will be complete.

“I would be speechless if I heard from any of them,” Tannone laughed. “If any of those guys even listened to it and said they didn’t hate it, that would be cool with me. But they probably have way better things to do with their time. The fact that it got that close to either of those guys is amazing enough for me.”

It’s a new year and, for many people, that means it’s a chance to start fresh — an opportunity to make promises to themselves and resolve to be a better person. In 2009, we expect to hear big things from some new up-and-coming rappers in the game. Our first artist is a refreshingly different kind of Southern artist — so refreshing that he’s also featured in this week’s Mixtape Monday: B.o.B.

It’s easy to say that B.o.B. is different, but who in the Atlanta rap scene isn’t different? The city’s roster of rappers includes ATLiens (Outkast), a snowman (Young Jeezy) and even a king (T.I.). And over the past year, Atlanta has had a string of distinctive hit records. From Rocko’s “Umma Do Me” and Shawty Lo’s “Dey Know” to Yung L.A.’s “Ain’t I,” the city’s eclectic rap scene has developed specific subgenres, which also include crunk and snap.

B.o.B. doesn’t really fit in with any of those, however.

“Being in Atlanta around that time period, watching all of the successful artists, naturally you are compelled to emulate that,” B.o.B. said. “I felt the pressure to fit into this … it’s like an unspoken rule or something.”

By the end of that performance, he received a standing ovation. “Ever since then, I wasn’t afraid to be different.”

This attitude eventually landed him on T.I.’s label, Grand Hustle, where, to his surprise, he found he fit right in. “I feel like I’m a breath of fresh air to Grand Hustle, but at the same time, it’s all good,” he said. “It’s family.”

Despite signing with the label, he said he still has to hustle and wants to continue developing his sound, which he called universal and continuously changing.

More likely, everything’s gonna sound like him. Maybe he’s not so different after all …

Come back on Tuesday when we show some love to the not-so-well-kept-secret Wale. …

My last few situations, it seems like I’ve ended up in jail and people have used that as a way to put civil suits on me. That’s the new wave of getting money.
