Taking a break from Where The Wild Things Are-related Karen O news for a moment … When Passion Pit got their hands on “Heads Will Roll” we ended up with so-so Sprockets-style techno. If you recall, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ video for the original included a dancing werewolf, the single’s cover art featuring the same wolf (see above) sporting lipstick traces. In time or Halloween, we have a non-single take on the It’s Blitz tune. Basically, A-Trak’s taken a break from those recent ’70s Duck Sauce stylings to conjure a darker dance club workout.

During the Q&A session that accompanied the Flaming Lips’ pop-up store/show thing in Los Angeles last week, Wayne “let it slip” that the band had joined forces with Stardeath And White Dwarfs to cover the entire Dark Side Of The Moon LP, featuring guest spots from Peaches and Henry Rollins. At their Friday morning stop at KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic, Coyne filled in the gaps a bit — Rollins is doing the voice overs, Peaches offers the “orgasmic” vocal on “The Great Gig In The Sky” — before performing the ‘73 classic’s closing piece, “Eclipse.” Skip to 28:30 to hear some of the project’s backstory and that song, or watch the whole thing for performances of “Watching the Planets,” “Convinced of the Hex,” and “I Can Be A Frog.” Wayne does the Rollins bit (”There’s no dark side of the moon really…”), admittedly sounding more like Jimmy Stewart than a Black Flag singer, using lyrics sheets to remind himself of Roger Waters’s lyrics. After that, you get “Enthusiasm For Life Defeats Existential Fear.”

The release date for Phrazes For The Young has been pushed back into November, but Julian’s solo stroke is still on course with its streaming bits, first via lead single “11th Dimension,” most recently with a four-minute album preview. The next Casablancas-sanctioned listen is “River Of Brakelights,” which is itself about as ADD as Friday’s LP collage sampler. Julian said he was trying “to capture the catchiness of modern music,” but this one is more about capturing the schizophrenic anxiety of post-Yorke music. Weird arpeggios and breakneck beats swirl in phrazes, while the key gradually modulates upward in total. Try substituting “getting the hang of it” for “the raindrops” and you have a “Sit Down. Stand Up.” freakout. Somebody get Julian a valium.

The Death Cab cutie has stopped at nothing in paving his way into Hollywood for this silver screen debut. He wrote a song for that vampire movie. He even married an actress! Very method. Gibbard’s time has finally come, playing one of the hideous men briefly interviewed by Sarah Quinn (two “n”s) in John Krasinski’s big screen adaptation of David Foster Wallace’s short-story collection Brief Interviews With Hideous Men. We saw him making the rounds at Sundance, but now we get to watch him work it out in front of a camera with this excerpt of his performance in the film. As far as lead singers go, he does a pretty OK job! Watching it I’m reminded of the old show biz maxim, “Acting is all in the hands.” Which actually isn’t an old show biz maxim, I just made it up. But if it were true, Ben would win all the awards. His hands are a great actor.

Nathan Williams is finally having some screws put in that broken wrist, which means Wavves’ Smell gig on Thursday is off. He writes (with one hand) on his blog: “I’m bummed, I was really looking fwd to this show! Ironic I miss the skatepark benefit because I broke my wrist skateboarding. Anyways, I will be back soon but until then you can jam on this. This was a demo that I never ended up coming back to and probably wont end up doing anything with but jam on it n-e-wayz.” Go here for an AIF or have this MP3:
