Our long national nightmare is over, Jay Leno has relinquished his vice grip on comedic mediocrity (for a few months), it is now Conan’s turn to bring some class and laffs to the venerable institution of late night television that is The Tonight Show. (Videogum is all over the show itself; we’re on the choice of musical guest. And the choice of music guest for a debut show can be more than just a contribution to the annals of rock trivia: For his maiden Late Night telecast, O’Brien booked Radiohead. It was an exciting and symbolic choice, a barrier-crossing band for what was, ultimately, a similarly ambitious and inventive show. So what does booking Pearl Jam represent? They’re probably our most elegantly aged major rock band, so there is the class, the reverence for the past … but what about the relevance to the now? Well thanks to Cameron Crowe, Target, and some aggressive information control from their NYC lawyers, Pearl Jam’s Google News index spiked just in time to make their performance as Conan’s first musical guest on his debut as the Tonight Show host independently zeitgeisty. (Oh, and they played a new song, too.) The set looks great. The new set’s sound is another issue.

Yes the motherload edition of Rock Band becomes a reality on 9/9/09. Everybody is excited. Apple Corps/Viacom/MTV Games shareholders are super excited. Your boyfriend is already spurting himself in anticipation. It’s all happening, nerds! Even Sir Macca himself is demonstrably enthused, if you can take the fact that his background screens during that great Coachella set basically became a commercial for this installment of Rock Band. It’s billed as a “first-of-its-kind music-based video game offers a revolutionary tour of The Beatles’ music, career, and legacy.” Here’s a trailer to help visualize why this is not your average timesuck:

Hands, the full-length electropop debut from oft-remixed bra spokeswoman Victoria Hesketh, can be heard on MySpace. The LP will be out in the US via the just-revived Elektra label, following an EP (Illuminations) on 6/9.
MIcachu is 21-year-old Mica Levy and her band is the Shapes. So named because they have geometric figures on their shirts maybe, but maybe more for the fractured blocks of pop-tics turned inside out and flush against each other in their music’s skewed minimalism. The British trio turned in our favorite set by a newcomer at this year’s SXSW; they’ve also turned in one of 2009’s best debut albums in Jewellery. It’s all good enough that I went to see them again at the tiny Williamsburg listening room Death By Audio the night after we returned from Austin — a night traditionally reserved for the icing of backs and livers — because Micachu’s irresistible on stage, but also to hear again the way their sets further reconfigure the material’s jagged dynamics and arrangements. “Golden Phone”’s melodies have a summer breeze, the pulse is sugary sweet, and there are some nice aural curveballs at the edges, so it’s a nice choice for a June-reintroduction to the trio before a slate of summer dates. And there probably isn’t a better way to give it a video than with patty cake, snaps, and the three being adorable in front of a green screen. So, here you go:

On the heels of last week’s drug-fueled onstage breakdown and subsequent apology, Nathan Williams will be taking a much-needed breather this month. Appearances at NYC’s Bowery Ballroom 7/15 and Pitchfork Fest 7/18 are still on. Video of the Primavera debacle here.
Brandon Flowers returned from camping this past weekend to hook up with Bruce Sprinsgteen & the E Street Band in the Netherlands for the Pinkpop Festival. (Thanks for the tip, Curtis.) Knowing the Killers’ drama like we do, it’s logical they’d tackle “Thunder Road,” basically a Garden State fairytale. Flowers replaced his usual feathers with a fan-boy smile and manages to fit-in with the band around him. Unfortunately, the person shooting the video sang along with 6,000 of his or her friends, and didn’t manage to fit-in with the band (at all).
On Thursday night, Pearl Jam played a secret gig at the Showbox in Seattle. According to various online reports, the performance was attended by 300 paid extras who signed up for a concert shoot by a mystery act. And while NDAs were signed and cellphones were banned, the secret reason for the show came out via blogs and Twitter: the famously anti-corporate rock band was licensing brand new song “The Fixer” to a Target commercial, directed by their old bud Cameron Crowe. Or at least that’s what some attendees claimed on blog posts … that have now been mysteriously deleted?

You can hear beats from the long-delayed Detox in the cola’s new “Trust Me, I’m A Doctor” ad campaign. In his spot, Dre claims “scientific tests prove when you drink Dr. Pepper slow, the 23 flavors taste even better.” Watch and learn.
It’s fitting Portland pop crew Nurses decided to call their new collection Apple’s Acre: They could’ve easily retitled it Apples In Stereo’s Sound. It’s not that the trio doesn’t bring their own details to the Elephant 6 thing — their take’s more obviously lo-fi, raw, strange, and in a song like “Technicolor,” sorta early Devendra Banhart-esque — but the overlaps are there, and should be a treat for folks who enjoy breezy vintage-sounding psychedelia. See, for instance, “Caterpillar Playground.”
