Bonnaroo 2010 Lineup Includes Jay-Z, Weezer, Flaming Lips

Jay-Z, Weezer, and the Flaming Lips are among the first batch of artists confirmed for the 2010 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, to be held June 10-13 in — as always — Manchester, Tennessee.
Artists are being announced in a series of rolling reveals that will continue throughout the day on Bonnaroo’s MySpace page. Tickets for the fest are on sale now through its official site, with a four-day pass running $234.50. An RV pass (if you want to experience the fest in luxury) will cost an extra $150. As in previous years, Bonnaroo is also offering attendees the opportunity to purchase tickets on an installment plan.
Other early confirmations for Bonnaroo 2010 are Norah Jones, comedian/ Grammy-winning bluegrass enthusiast Steve Martin (with his Steep Canyon Rangers), Wale, Regina Spektor, John Fogerty, the Avett Brothers, Medeski, Martin and Wood, Ingrid Michaelson, Bassnectar, Phoenix and hotly tipped Brits the xx.
Jay-Z has already been announced as a headliner for the 2010 Coachella Festival, to be held April 16-18 in Indio, California. The Flaming Lips will be joined by Stardeath and the White Dwarves (the band fronted by Lips’ main man Wayne Coyne’s nephew) and — much like they did in a raucous Oklahoma City New Year’s Eve show — the groups will be performing Pink Floyd’s epic Dark Side of the Moon album. News of Weezer’s confirmation actually leaked earlier in the day, when the band tweeted that they would be performing at the 2010 ‘Roo.
Through various online sources, the fest’s other rumored acts include the Dave Matthews Band and Georgia metallers Baroness. But the only way to get the latest confirmations is to head over to Bonnaroo’s MySpace page, where a new band is being announced every five minutes.

Spoon - "Written In Reverse" Video

When we gave you our thoughts on Transference, “Written In Reverse” was described as “a bona fide rocker with Daniel’s busy throat-shredding falsetto, splashy drums, and piano noise brushed beneath the big guitars.” When the band brought the song to Conan (RIP), some of you thought Britt’s voice was a bit too shredded. The Danny Clinch-shot video for the track finds the group running through another performance of the song, this time in black and white beside a view-reversing mirror. Of course, it’s set to the studio version, so no worries there. The guys are also more animated than last time through, as that above Britt-as-Hendrix thumbnail suggests.

Hot Chip Have A "One Life Stand" With Fallon

Instead of the Depeche moodier “Take It In,” Hot Chip offered the wistful come on of their One Life Stand title track on Fallon last night. They got some assistance with the airy hooks from the Roots, but sadly zero circle dancing. Afterward Alexis Taylor looks a bit bummed — the final transition did seem a tad wonky — until he’s comforted by a smiling Al Doyle. Way to stand by your whole man, Al.

New Twin Shadow - "Castles In The Snow"

Twins come in pairs (FACTS), and since we recently turned our eyes towards terrific Brooklyn newcomers Twin Sister, it’s only fitting we’ve found them a nominal neighborhood counterpart in George Lewis Jr. aka Twin Shadow. His press materials point toward the krautworks of Can and Kraftwerk as inspirations, possibly because Lewis logged time in Berlin before returning here and launching this project. Maybe you can hear a bit of them in the bass-picked breakdown and chilly synths lining the track’s high end, but once filtered through Twin Shadow’s emotional vocals and intermittent guitars it all comes out more like if Junior Boys moved to the 11211. Grizzly Bear sound sculpter Chris Taylor will release Twin Shadow’s debut EP this year via his quickly growing Terrible label, but you can start with the very promising intro of “Castles In The Snow.”

Band To Watch: The Delta Mirror

Los Angeles trio the Delta Mirror say they’re of a mind with bands like the Big Pink and Fuck Buttons, acts bent simultaneously toward shoegaze and electronics. But the DM is less expansive and less noisy, respectively, than those acts: Their debut LP Machines That Listen is downcast and down-tempo, heartfelt and brooding, immersive and swirling. It’s also gorgeous and incredibly repeatable. The beats are savvy. They glitch and break unpredictably, tricks the trio’s Craig Gordon and David Bolt no doubt picked up while working in their hip-hop project prior to this one. Lyrically, each song takes place in a different room of a hospital; it’s an emotional and conceptual palette that mirrors the Antlers’ Hospice. There are three voices at play, including bassist Karrie K’s, but it’s a gothy baritone that pushes most of the songs, registering like Interpol’s Paul Banks discovering IDM and M83. You should hear the whole record, but start with the gem “He Was Worse Than The Needle He Gave You.” You can grab it below, along with the premiere of its beat-flipped, upticked remix which, true to the band’s hip-hop roots, is filed by anticon dude Alias. And cap it all with a listen of “A Room For Waiting,” patiently post-rock in its piano-tinkling, exquisitely textured, a good example of the Delta Mirror’s ability to blend beats to phrases that become scenery-setting mantras: “You tell me to be patient because I’m not the only one but tell me how many were before me / how many were before me tell me how many were before me…” Great stuff:

Coachella Nixes Single Day Tickets

Goldenvoice now insists that you buy in for all three days of its Indio fest, saying “single- and two-day people are clogging up the hotels and making it so people who want to go for three days can’t find a hotel.” On the flip, camping prices are down. Stereogum & team9 Present… MySplice 4: 2009 Mashed Up

There could not have been a more apt ID3 than that of Freelance Hellraiser’s “Stroke Of Genius,” the MP3 that launched this decade’s most fitting musical legacy. Parts of two or three or thirty tracks mixed into one supersong? What better than mashups to soundtrack a generation of smartphone-wielding Adderall chompers coming of age in a world where all music is free. In the years since Freelance Hellraiser (and 2 Many DJs, Go Home Productions, DJ Earworm, Party Ben, et al) raised the bar for bastard pop, we’ve seen bootlegging go mainstream in the hands of Girl Talk and Danger Mouse, not to mention 2004’s chart-topping Collision Course and the dozen questionable Jigga x [rock band] torrents in its wake. This year, bands like Passion Pit and Phoenix distributed stems of their hits as blogbaiting publicity stunts. (It worked!) Still, when it comes to remixes, few are more thrilling than hearing the vocals of one song over the instrumental of another and have it absolutely work. Which is why we’ve again collaborated with our favorite mashup artist, Australian producer Neil Mason aka team9, to mix our favorite tracks of 2009 with familiar oldies, creating something more than the sum of their parts. The process — Stereogum acquiring exclusive audio and making playlists, Neil working his ACID Pro magic (i.e., the hard part) — started months ago, with an eye on this holiday deadline. It’s our fourth annual Christmas present to you, and we think it’s the best MySplice yet. Enjoy…
