A few months back we liked Philadelphia band Sun Airway’s remix of Delorean’s “Stay Close.” The same swell that marked that remix shows up on Sun Airway’s Nocturne of Exploded Crystal Chandelier. On “Oh, Naoko,” the vocals and bass melody contain the song’s pop hook, though it’s wrapped in gossamer synth sweeps. Very catchy and recommended:

New New Yorker Brad Oberhofer (he moved from Tacoma, Washington after his parents’ house burned down) has a band when he plays live, but songs like “Don’tneedya” emphasize the “bedroom” part of his bedroom pop project Oberhofer. His echoed vocals still sound claustrophobic, and there are bits of keyboard, samples, and other details that happen at the end of his phrases that make this sound well labored-over. Oberhofer just played NYC last night, but they’ll be back 9/17 for a show with Small Black and Indian Jewelry at Monster Island in Brooklyn.

‘Love the Way You Lie’ with Eminem becomes her sixth #1 on the pop chart.

Rihanna is making hit songs, breaking records and taking names. The singer is currently tied with a few of her pop comrades for the most #1 songs on the Pop Songs radio airplay chart. She ties with Lady Gaga, Beyoncé and Mariah Carey for the most #1’s in the Nielsen survey. Rihanna now has six #1’s on her résumé thanks to her chart-topping collaboration with Eminem, “Love the Way You Lie,” according to Billboard.com.
Rihanna’s other #1 songs on the pop chart include 2006’s “SOS” (for one week); 2008’s “Take a Bow” (for three weeks); 2008’s “Disturbia” (three weeks); her late-2008 T.I. collabo “Live Your Life” (two weeks); and this year’s “Rude Boy” (two weeks). “Love the Way You Lie” has been on top for one week so far.
Earlier this year Beyoncé and Lady Gaga tied Mariah Carey for six #1 pop songs with their collaboration, “Telephone.” Carey had six songs hit #1 on the Hot 100 before the Pop Songs chart was created in 1993, and then six others since its creation. Meanwhile, Beyoncé collected hers from 2003 to 2010. Gaga was the fastest to tie the record, with all six released from 2009-2010.
Avril Lavigne, Pink, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake all come in a close second with five #1 pop songs in their careers.
Rihanna had fans talking last week when the video for “Love the Way You Lie” was released. The singer, who was assaulted by then-boyfriend Chris Brown in 2009, appears in the video that depicts a violent love affair between Dominic Monaghan and Megan Fox.
How do you think Rihanna compares to the other women at the top of the pop chart? Sound off in the comments.

I’ve been excitedly following the updates from Nathan Moore’s spontaneous tour through Northern California, dubbed the Hippy Fiasco Tour. What started with two iPhones and a lack of proper cell phone reception has turned into a High Sierra family reunion of sorts, with the crew getting treated to custom t-shirts, beer from Lagunitas Brewery, and a wonderfully welcome vibe from the fans in the area that are making sure that Nathan is staying busy and hopefully recouping some costs from his festival jaunt out here in the first place. When I first heard of this I immediately thought best to help out wherever possible, and the first thing that came to mind was that I really want to pack the Connecticut Yankee tonight when the tour rolls back through San Francisco.
The Yankee is a good spot for the gang and I figured it’d be ripe for a small crew of musical friends that would perhaps join Nathan on stage (Trevor Garrod, I’m looking in your direction). But nothing had been announced through yesterday, so being so bold as I was — I offered myself up as a DJ for the night to help bring out a big audience of my friends, Nathan’s friends, some of our random Twitter followers, whatever — I just wanted to help bring folks. And I’ve been working on this awesome space rock dub electronic one-man show lately called Dude House, and I’ve played a few slots around San Francisco and keep getting good feedback about some of the jams I’ve been laying down. Musically, space rock dub and Nathan Moore’s good-hearted folk tunes are a perfect fit. The crew loved the idea, so we’ve got ourselves a little shared showcase tonight as you’ll now get to see your trusty editor wrecking the decks at setbreak and following Nathan’s set. Sickness.
Hopefully this is the first of many of these type of events that I hope to start putting on in the future. I’ve been a fan of live music for so long and I’ve been working on music in the background for the past few years, this time coming firmly to terms with my love for electronic music, dubbed effects, and drum machines. And I feel that if I’m to sit here and be a critic and help drive some buzz online to the music I love, I also have to be willing to contribute to that world and bring some fresh music into being that the world hasn’t heard yet.
Join us tonight for the fun, and bring your friends. We’re also tentatively planning to webcast the show assuming we can get an internet connection at the venue; stay tuned for that and stay on our @LiveMusicBlog account to get updates from the show.

Influential post-rock band Mogwai is streaming their live concert film, Burning, right here on LMB starting live at 12pm PDT today (about five minutes from press time). Hang out and wait for the film to begin, featuring an introduction of the film by Stuart from the band and Vincent Moon the director followed by the screening and then ended with a question and answer session with any of us that decide to get social on the widgets below.
Head over to their official website to pre-order packages of Burning along with their new album, Special Moves. This reminds me of something that Phish would be with a new release. Very cool and innovative use of online media really augmenting traditional…

Eels put out Hombre Lobro in 2009, six months later followed it up with the particularly bummed out End Times. The flood of material’s intended to be a trilogy, it’s concluding chapter coming this summer with Tomorrow Morning. You’ve heard “Looking Up,” here’s the video for the spacious and soothing keyboard groove cut “Spectacular Girl.” What makes this girl spectacular: both her taste in secretarial paraphernalia, and choice of assassin rifle.

Scotland’s soaring, smoldering emogazers the Twilight Sad, BTW Class of ‘06, are preparing a new 12″ for release on FatCat this September, the follow up to last year’s Forget The Night Ahead. Track one is “The Wrong Car,” as thick on the brogue as it is on chorus catharsis. A point of distinction between this and the Twilight Sad’s excellent back catalogue: substituting those stadium-sized guitars for swooning string arrangements for the better part (though not all) of the track. It’s a minor tweak on an winning formula, but enough of one for another dose of win. (And don’t worry, Andy’s guitars are smeared all over the track halfway out.) “You’re on the right side of the wrong car” is the vocalist James Graham’s mantra, a line he probably wrote after getting his pulled over by some fake cops and mugged at gunpoint. Or after an American friend of his came to visit and couldn’t sort out the car seating situation.
