Why She Will Win: Lacey’s ability to play to the camera is effortless. Her hypnotic gaze and irresistible smile lull you in and make you forget you’re watching “American Idol.”

On Thursday night, “American Idol” revealed its Top 12 finalists for the ninth season of the hit show. MTV News “Idol” expert Jim Cantiello whipped up a handy cheat sheet for each finalist, breaking down each candidate’s journey thus far. Michael Lynche

Michael “Big Mike” Lynche is like a cross between season three’s goofball Matt Rogers and the Velvet Teddy Bear, Ruben Studdard. On steroids. Not literally, since Big Mike is a personal trainer, not a juice-taker. As far as we know.

Best Performance: Big Mike’s a rare example of an “Idol” contestant who shines brighter without an instrument. A confident take on James Brown’s “It’s a Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World” was entertaining, but his go-for-broke version of Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work,” which moved Kara DioGuardi to tears, was a game changer.

Weakest Performance: Week one’s Jason Mraz impression didn’t win him any fans. He sang “I’m Yours” but he wasn’t ours. Not by a mile.

Tragic Backstory: Big Mike’s wife went into labor with their first child during Hollywood Week. Extended phone call montages and conversations about her birth canal followed. We’re not sure who will need more therapy: his daughter, whose birth her dad missed because he was auditioning for a televised karaoke competition, or his wife, whose birth was documented in eye-opening detail by “Idol” cameras.

Why He Will Win: Big Mike has a fun nickname, a newborn baby and a charming personality. Ellen DeGeneres deemed him the one to beat this week. If he continues to pick smart songs, he could muscle his way into the finale.

Why He Will Lose: He’s likable, but in a TV host kind of way, not an “I wanna run out and buy that guy’s album” kind of way.

What He Should Sing: Mike’s personal goal should be to make every single judge cry at least once this season. We know Simon’s mourning the loss of his dad. If Lynche turned John Lennon’s “Mother” into a soul tour de force, Cowell would lose it.

On Being Called “The One To Beat” By Ellen: “I think it’s way too early for anybody to be ‘the one to beat,’ ” Lynche said. “It’s a long season. I plan on being around for a long time, so you can’t take any of that stuff to heart, negative or positive.”

Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page, where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.

On Thursday night, “American Idol” revealed its Top 12 finalists for the ninth season of the hit show. MTV News “Idol” expert Jim Cantiello whipped up a handy cheat sheet for each finalist, breaking down each candidate’s journey thus far. With angsty rock vocals and a troubled-youth past, Lee Dewyze is the brooding bad boy of this “Idol” season. Lee’s weathered voice shares traits with rock superstars like Chad Kroeger and Daughtry, which might explain why the judges are especially supportive of Dewyze’s “Idol” journey.

Best Performance: Simon may have loved Lee’s “Chasing Cars,” but we thought his unexpected take on Owl City’s “Fireflies”
showed more promise. Plus, it was the only time the former paint salesman looked like he was having fun onstage.

Weakest Performance: Dewyze struggled to stay on pitch during Hinder’s “Lips of an Angel.” He also struggled to keep his pants up, making him look like a low-level amateur.

Tragic Backstory: We found out last week that Lee was kicked out of public school … for something. In a sincere interview package, Dewyze pointed to music (and his teachers) as an inspiration to change his troubled ways.

Why He Will Win: Lee’s voice is a slam dunk for radio, and the only thing “Idol” fans like more than voting for their fave is to see their fave’s music move up the charts. It appears Simon Cowell has picked Lee to be his pet project, too, yet he talks about him as if he’s the dark horse of the season. A dark horse who’s also getting plugged by Cowell? It seems foolproof! Finally, Dewyze is starting to attract a heavily female cougar fanbase, and it wouldn’t be the first time those ladies have pushed a dude to the top of the heap.

Why He Will Lose: Lee’s constant battle with pitch may prevent him from ever having a true “moment.”

What He Should Sing: If given the chance, Dewyze should return to the modern rock format, but deviate from vocalists who share a similar rasp. How about the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Under the Bridge”?

On His Least Favorite Performance, “Chasing Cars”: “I was so nervous and [the judges] said I was pitchy and I knew I was. 311 Talk Plans For ‘Ultimate’ 311 Day Show In Las Vegas

Thursday’s show in Las Vegas celebrating the band’s legacy could last as long as five hours.
By James Montgomery

311’s “P-Nut” Aaron Charles Wills

Photo: John Shearer/ WireImage

Are you at work today? You totally shouldn’t be. After all, it’s 311 Day, which is practically a national holiday at this point.

Ever since March 11, 2000 — when 311 decided to perform an extended 46-song set at New Orleans’ State Palace Theatre — celebrating 311 Day has become an annual tradition for the band’s diehard fans. And every other year, the band gets in on the act as well, throwing an elaborate, certifiably epic concert that also doubles as a fan convention, party, and de facto rite of passage for 311 obsessives.

This year, the band has taken over Las Vegas for a three-day extravaganza, the centerpiece of which is Thursday (March 11) night’s performance at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. (MTV News has two fans on the ground in Sin City.) In anticipation of the show — which, rumor has it, will last five hours — we spoke to 311 bassist Aaron “P-Nut” Wills, who was already preparing himself for the looming marathon.

“I don’t think we’d be able to physically play a show like this, not even once a month. But I’m ready. I’m trying not to think of it as this huge thing, because, if you think about it, the people who attend most rock shows are on their feet for the same amount of time,” Wills said.

“It helps to see it from that side of things. We’re the entertainment, but of course the fans are going to be there with us the whole time. Then again, [frontman] Nick [Hexum] does do marathons, so I know he’s going to be ready. We all are, because we think of this as a huge opportunity to do something special, to play the ultimate show every two years for our most fanatic fans. It’s perfect.”

And while Wills wouldn’t reveal any of the surprises the band has in store for fans at Thursday’s show, he did say that things are most certainly going to be epic. It’s only fitting, after all.

“It’s just going be as big as it gets for us. It’s going be nuts,” he said. “I’ve only seen some of the sketches of what our set is going to look like, and it’s amazing. Our front-of-house guy designed it, and he’s kind of a nutcase, but we trust him.”

And while the idea of playing the ultimate show before their ultimate fans is inspiring, what really drives Wills, and the rest of the band, is what 311 Day represents. It’s a gathering, a community, a chance for both the band and its fans to share the love.

Aaron Kelly performs on “American Idol” on Wednesday

Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images

Yesterday we gave “American Idol” producers props for reducing the show to one hour instead of two. Today we feel like tossing the judges in detention for their shenanigans this week, from Tuesday’s awkwardly forced lap-sitting incident between Simon Cowell and Ellen DeGeneres to Wednesday’s infantile Simon/Kara DioGuardi flirtation.

But this is a singing competition, isn’t it? So on to the contestants. The evening took off with strong performances from Lee Dewyze and Alex Lambert and U-turned into Snoozeville at a certain point, before blissfully blasting away with an injection of Michael Lynche-provided power. Excellent
Michael Lynche: First things first. While Big Mike’s take on Maxwell’s version of Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work” was the highlight of the evening, it was nowhere near the waterworks-generating territory that Kara’s tears suggested. It’s the most clichéd “Idol” explanation ever, but he really was up there just having fun. It turns out she also makes poison, which she dumps into some honey and delivers to Beyoncé’s booth, dressed as a towering waitress with a telephone dangling in her eye. Gibson smothers his breakfast in the stuff and dies. Unfortunately, everyone else in the joint — including Gaga’s pals the Semi Precious Weapons — does the same, and they all suffer the same fate. It’s sort of creepy, to be honest.

The two then pile back into the Wagon and head out onto the highway (not before Gaga does a solo performance in front of the vehicle while dressed in an ultra-tight leopard-print number), and as the video reaches its conclusion, they deliver some more of those cheesy lines, join hands and zoom toward the horizon, police sirens wailing in the background. So now that it’s finally here, what else can really be said about the “Telephone” video? To be honest, I’m not sure. It is electric and excellent and alive. It is certainly the best big-budget clip since, well, Gaga’s last big-budget clip and probably the best video you’ll see all year (well, either that or OK Go’s new one). It more than lived up to the hype, which, frankly, few thought it would. But, perhaps most notably, it is an event. With “Telephone,” Gaga has entered the rarest of pop stratospheres, up there with the Madonnas and the, gasp, Michael Jacksons.
