In the first of his new four-part series “Better Know A Beatle,” Stephen sits down with Liverpudlian knight Paul McCartney. The interview does not go smoothly it is all very antagonistic (wink) but by the end we know who is Paul’s favorite Beatle and that the Dalai Lama might be a cannibal. Watch.

There was the gauntlet throw and the Twitter baiting. Last night Stephen referenced both as he celebrated jumping to #2 on iTunes with his Xmas album, asked why you buy 808s when you could “just put a tin can to your ear and lean against a Pac-Man machine,” and showcased his MC skills: “Mr. West, I ain’t saying you a gold digger — just don’t understand that last Twitter.” Watch.

Mostly because she played one, but your Gummys votes suggest you’d think so anyway. Leslie helped Stephen bring some musical cheer to his Xmas special last night, and later sprinkled angel’s dust on his head which led to Stephen watching Elvis Costello get mauled by a bear outside his window. It’s high concept holiday comedy. Watch it at Videogum.

Mr. Simon continued being awesome with a stop over at Stephen Colbert’s place last night. Paul was on hand to promote his new book Lyrics 1964-2008, a title which Colbert deemed utterly unpoetic (his suggestion: Word Salad Jazzmatron). Simon’s stay spanned two segments. The first had Stephen ask Simon to defend some of his hippie-era lyrics, explain what exactly Julio was doing down by the schoolyard, and why Paul needed to walk out on Cecilia to wash his face. (”Well it was the ’60s so I don’t remember.”) After wits were traded, Paul performed “American Tune,” with the stars of the flag and the city skyline hanging behind him. Utterly poetic.

Dave Navarro, Stephen Perkins, Eric Avery, and Count Farrell performed together last night for the first time since … well, the first time since April when they were hailed as godlike by NME. Last night’s gig at downtown bar La Cita was longer, more intimate, and cost to attend. Buzzbands.la has some nice photos. We have videos of “Ocean Size” and “Whores.”
