This is really big because it finally establishes that you don’t need to wear twee costumes with butterfly wings to play Sufjan songs, you can totally do it when you wake up with your dyed-black bangs covering your lip rings, too! See, no need to go out of your way and dress up to play Sufjan songs. Watch some angsty Hot Topic teens cover “John Wayne Gacy, Jr.” (what, you expected “Adlai Stevenson”?) at Hipster Runoff.

On Saturday night, Sufjan Stevens returned to the site of his BQE suite — the Brooklyn Academy of Music — for the latest installment in the BAM Takeover series. Suf was listed only as event curator, selecting rising composer Nico Muhly and St. Vincent among others to regale an audience comprised of, as some attendees told me, “drunken hipsters.” Sounds about right. My friend Kathryn twittered that Sufjan did make an appearance after all, joining Annie Clark (who called Stevens “Sufjams”) on a rendition of Phil Collins’s “In The Air Tonight.” Cue the two day YouTube searching frenzy. All we’ve come up with is a 30 second clip, which is too short but still worth a listen because Sufjan + Phil Collins is sorta right in our wheelhouse.

As previously mentioned, Naomi Shelton & the Gospel Queens perform every Friday night at the Fat Cat in NYC (75 Christopher St.) (for $3.00). Look for Sufjan in the crowd (because it’s Christopher Street) (JUST KIDDING) (because he’s a fan).
