After several postponements due to dental surgery, a courthouse fire and court-date rescheduling, Lil Wayne finally turned himself in on Monday to begin his one-year jail sentence at Rikers Island. However, he wasn’t the only one feeling the strain. The rapper’s ex-wife Antonia “Toya” Johnson and daughter Reginae shuttled back and forth to the New York City courthouse from Atlanta in anticipation of his incarceration.
“It was up and down, you know. One minute we thought he was going and she’d be sad, and then he don’t go,” Johnson told Vibe magazine recently. “We [were] in New York like two times and we ended up turning right back around because he didn’t go.”
Despite all of the back-and-forth, Reginae missed seeing her father on Monday when he began his sentence stemming from a July 2007 gun-possession charge.
“The last day he finally went in, we didn’t go, so my daughter was like, ‘I wish I would’ve went.’ It was just too much. I just didn’t want to let her see that again ‘cause both times she took it real hard,” said Johnson. “So I was like, I’m not gon’ let her go this last time. I’m just gon’ make sure he talk to her ‘cause I didn’t know if he was really gonna go. They kept pushing back.”
Wayne might be the biggest rapper on the planet, but he’s just “Dad” to Reginae, so Johnson said the time apart will be hard on the 11 year-old.
“He just told me to be strong and don’t really trip. Don’t let her see me down,” said Johnson. “At first my daughter would see me a little sad and you know kids they react off of your feelings sometimes, so he was just like, ‘Be strong, make sure you take care of her. Make sure she straight and keep her phone on all the time so I can call her. The time is gonna fly by.’
“The whole point of him being in jail is just not good for her — to say her dad’s in jail,” Johnson continued. “But at this point it is what it is, and we just gotta make the best of it. I’ma take her to visit him and talk to him and she’ll get through this eight months. It’ll fly by. I tell her all the time, ‘Just call daddy and tell him you love him,’ and he’ll be home soon.”
Lil Wayne and Johnson married in 2004 and divorced in 2006. In 2009, Johnson and her friend, T.I.’s fiancée Tiny, debuted their BET reality series “Tiny & Toya.” The second season premieres on April 13.

After Lil Wayne’s Sentencing, What’s Next?

Rapper will now be booked and processed before ending up at Rikers Island.

Now that Lil Wayne has surrendered to the court, he’ll be booked through the New York City court system and processed by the Department of Correction.
The action could take hours, with Wayne not likely to see his cell and new bed until late in the evening, according to retired corrections officer Charles Reid, who spoke to MTV News about the process. Reid first spoke with MTV News last month about safety issues surrounding the multiplatinum MC.
Reid characterized the booking and processing order as a tedious journey from standing before the judge until inmates arrive at their bunks.
First, Lil Wayne’s case will be closed by the court and the rapper will be booked as a guilty party and fingerprinted. From there, paperwork will be drawn up and the Cash Money lyricist will be transferred from the court’s custody to the Department of Correction, which also has offices in the New York Criminal Court building.
Once Wayne is transferred over to the DOC, he’ll be assigned a sentence number unique to each inmate. That number will include “anything you need to know about him,” Reid explained. Data about why the rapper was sentenced, his location and a list of his history will be detailed in his sentence number.
From there, the rapper may be kept in Manhattan at the Tombs, otherwise known as the Manhattan Detention Complex. Depending on how long his processing takes and how busy officers are with transportation, the rapper could be held in the city. More than likely, though, Reid said, Lil Wayne’s ordeal will be completed in one day, spread out over many hours.
By the time the New Orleans native arrives to Rikers Island, he’ll have to turn over his personal items to be held on location until his sentence is completed. Corrections officers will then strip search Lil Wayne, order him to shower, and then provide the rapper with his prison attire. As Reid pointed out before, Lil Wayne will not have to cut his trademark dreadlocks. “The days of doing that are over,” he said. “They can’t make inmates do that anymore — it’s within their rights to maintain any kind of hairstyle.”
After that, Lil Wayne will be escorted to his cell where he’ll begin his prison stint; he pleaded guilty to an attempted-gun-possession charge, which will put him behind bars for eight months to a year.
A prison guard who spoke to MTV News late last month described what the rapper’s new setting would look like. According to the guard, who spoke to us anonymously because of the nature of the information, Lil Wayne will likely have his own 10-by-15-foot cell with a toilet, sink, bed and one window.
The view, according to the guard, however, won’t be much. “He’ll be able to see another wall [outside the window],” the guard said.

The Austin garage trio Woven Bones make dark, fuzzed, primitive, foot-stomping garage rockabilly shot through with J&MC, VU, and the Damned. (And you can extend that list to include a number of “the” bands: the Gun Club, the Troggs, the Cramps, etc.) I say trio, but right now guitarist/vocalist Andrew Burr and bassist Matty Nichols are the only permanent members until they nail down a steady drummer. They’re here today because Andrew does freelance design work and Matty’s been waiting tables at the same Austin Italian restaurant for five years. When not working, they’re in the midst of recording their first album. Kourtney Kardashian sat down with Life & Style magazine to talk about her son, Mason Dash Disick, and gushed about having a family of her own with boyfriend Scott Disick.
The “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” star, who announced she was pregnant over the summer, posed with her son, then eight days old, and said she couldn’t be more excited about the new addition to the Kardashian clan.
“I love that I now have my own little family — me, Scott and Mason,” Kardashian, 30, said. “It feels amazing [to be a mom]. It’s just so indescribable. You don’t get how good being a parent feels until it happens to you.”
Disick, 26, added: “My first time holding him was definitely special. But holding him the second time was even more special, and the third time was even more special than that. I fall so much more in love with this kid every day. I can’t imagine how much more in love with him I’m going to be by the time he’s 5 or 10 or 20!”
Kardashian, who documented the moment she found out she was pregnant on the spinoff show “Kourtney & Khloé Take Miami,” added that labor wasn’t as difficult as she thought it was going to be.
“It was surprisingly easy and just an incredible experience,” she said. “I always thought your first is supposed to be really hard, but it was easy. I have an amazing doctor. He actually delivered me! The room environment was just so relaxing, and everyone I wanted to be there was there — Scott, my mom, Kim and Khloé. No one under 18 is allowed in, so my little sisters Kendall and Kylie couldn’t come in. Actually, you’re only allowed to have two people in the room because of the swine flu — so we snuck Kim and Khloé in!”
Former party girl Kardashian explained that in her new life as a mom, it’s Mason who’s calling all the shots. “We’re on Mason’s schedule, waking up every couple of hours to breast-feed,” she said. “But it’s fun to get up and see him. I miss him by the time I see him again.”
With her busy schedule, would Kourtney like to add to her brood? “Right now, I’m obsessed with Mason and want to give him all my time. But being with him has definitely made me think about having another one,” she said. “Kim and I are 18 months apart. Growing up, we did everything together. It would be nice for Mason to have a little brother or sister that many months apart too.”

Drake’s So Far Gone Is Mixtape Daily’s Mixtape Of The Year

‘Best I Ever Had,’ song from mixtape actually garnered two Grammy nominations — but the streets love it too.

If Drake is not a household name for everyone just yet, the 23-year-old is on the front porch, ringing the bell. That he’s done it without even putting out an official album shows just how far he’s come in 12 months. What a journey it’s been for the Toronto native in 2009.
I first met Drake last year in Los Angeles around Grammy time. Lil Wayne’s co-manager Cortez Bryant introduced me to Drake as a new “singer” that they were working with. Drizzy was cool but barely spoke: At the time, there was no way I’d envision him as having a shot at making the MTV News’ “Hottest MCs in the Game” list, let alone finishing in the top three. He was a “singer,” right?
Everyone — including Drake — is probably surprised at how much he’s achieved this year. On the basis of its quality and impact, Mixtape Daily can say that So Far Gone isn’t just the top mixtape of 2009, but one of the greatest of all time. As a body of work, the project is better than most albums from the past few years.
First off, as promised, homes is singing, and it isn’t anything corny — in fact, one young lady I know was brought to tears after hearing “Brand New.” And his rapping skills were a stunning surprise: His clarity, tone, articulation, confidence and — always paramount — lyrics are first-class.
The impact of So Far Gone built gradually but rapidly, via blogs and word of mouth. As “Best I Ever Had” and “Successful” began picking up radio airplay, Drake began getting offers from just about every major label. Yet he elected to stay with Lil Wayne’s team and inked with their Young Money label, with distribution by the Universal powerhouse, which quickly released an altered version of the mixtape as an EP — and which has led to Drake receiving two Grammy nominations for “Best I Ever Had,” a song that was originally released on a mixtape! From the Net to the streets to the Grammy red carpet: Hands down, this is our mixtape of the year.

The title alone makes this track (not included on the re-release) a must-listen. Drake gives his declaration of being hip-hop’s newest That Dude. “The game got these old handprints on it/ But I’mma be the one to pour cement on it/ And start over.” His delivery was subtle but effective, like bullets from a silencer.
»“Houstatlantavegas.”
Drake described the song to us thusly: “A lot of people think it’s about strippers but it’s not. It’s actually kind of about women who live life with the mentality of a stripper, I guess you could say. Or it’s these girls that sort of drift from place to place and city to city depending on where the event is or where the next show is, where the next awards are. They have guys fly them out, meet guys there and they kind of … I have come across so many women like that either started out like that or I met them and they became like that. And it was just important for me early on, in that disc, to capture that emotion because it actually led to the demise of a relationship that I was in. So yeah, it was just kind of just a way of speaking to a specific type of girl. When I talk about women I don’t like to talk in generic terms, I like to really speak to women — not to say anything they’re doing is wrong but I like to be very specific when I talk to women, so they feel something.”

Drake: “I remember hearing the record and the drums coming together, and they were just so rocking and it has this pocket and there was no melody yet, and [when the chords came in] it was so eerie. I was like, ‘Yo that’s it!’ Every note fell into place. So I had this beat sitting here that I love so much and I didn’t know what to do with it. Sometimes as an artist you find a musical piece that you love so much that you want to do it justice. It’s a very overwhelming feeling at times. So I actually turned to Trey Songz and I was like, ‘Yo, I got this joint and I know how it makes me feel. I just don’t know how to say it the right way.’ So I sent him the record and he sent me back this hook and was like, I want to call the song ‘Successful.’ ”

Drake says of this track, which also is not included on the re-release: “My connection with the South is one of the best connections in the world: My father is from Memphis, Tennessee, so at a young age I got a feel for what the South was really about [because] I got to go down there every summer. It really shaped the person that I am to be able to go from a city like Toronto to Memphis. It’s like two different worlds: Toronto being this big city, more cultured, it’s very different than Memphis. So to go to Memphis I used to love the feeling that I would get hanging out with my cousins and hearing the music from the South and seeing how they support Southern artists. Actually, of the first artists that I really got that feeling from was Yo Gotti. In Memphis at the time Yo Gotti was fresh, he was new, he was just popping. I used to go to his shows and I would sneak in. It was just a thrilling feeling to be a part of it. And then I just started listening to music that the South had to offer and it influenced a lot of my sound.”

The song that got the most play in our office, its Just Blaze beat (taken from Jay-Z’s song of the same title) has a classic feel. Drizzy was so arrogant on the record, not too many people could have come after him on the beat, but Wayne was a downright rap hooligan on it. It has so many quotable lyrics in such a short time span, let’s just highlight: “Better cover your eyes, your face falling/ Watch the game from the side, I’m playing calling/ No, I didn’t say that I’m flawless/ But I damn sure don’t tarnish.”

Adam Lambert Loses Two More ABC Bookings

After his AMA performance, Lambert will not appear on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ or ‘New Year’s Rockin’ Eve.’

The fallout from Lambertgate continues. Two weeks after Adam Lambert set tongues wagging with his hyper-sexualized American Music Awards performance, the singer has reportedly lost out on two more bookings on ABC, which also aired the AMAs.
Lambert confirmed via Twitter on Wednesday that he has been unbooked from a December 17 performance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” — which had reportedly been confirmed before the AMAs — as well as the annual “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest.”
“Yes, sadly friends, ABC has canceled my appearances on Kimmel and NYE. 
Don’t blame them. It’s the FCC heat,” Lambert tweeted. Spokespeople for ABC, Dick Clark Productions and Kimmel’s show could not be reached for comment at press time. According to the Los Angeles Times, a source at Dick Clark Productions said there had been no finalized plans for Lambert to appear on “Rockin’ Eve.”
ABC had already uninvited Lambert from “Good Morning America” in the wake of the AMAs, drawing fire from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). The Lambert routine also drove the Disney-owned network to announce that it was tightening its standards on live performances.
While Lambert has said he doesn’t feel the need to apologize for his AMA performance — which included an open-mouth kiss with a male keyboard player, simulated oral sex from a male dancer and the sight of the “American Idol” runner-up walking two male dancers around on leashes — Lambert did tell Ellen DeGeneres on her show on Monday that perhaps he pushed the envelope a bit too hard.
“It was maybe a little too far,” he said. “I think in hindsight, I look back on it and I go, ‘OK, maybe that wasn’t the best first impression to make, the first second impression.’ ”
While Lambert’s tweet made mention of possible coming heat from the Federal Communications Commission, the Times noted that the AMA performance came after 10 p.m. (at 10:55 p.m., to be precise) a time period during which the FCC does not monitor network programming.
“The FCC has determined, with the approval of the courts, that there is a reasonable risk that children will be in the audience from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., local time,” reads an excerpt of guidelines on the FCC site. “Therefore, the FCC prohibits station licensees from broadcasting indecent material during that period. Material is indecent if, in context, it depicts or describes sexual or excretory organs or activities in terms patently offensive as measured by contemporary community standards for the broadcast medium. … The ’safe harbor’ refers to the time period between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., local time. During this time period, a station may air indecent and/or profane material.”
In a statement to the Times confirming the “Kimmel” cancellation, an ABC spokesperson did not mention the FCC, but said simply, “We decided not to move forward with the booking at this time.”
